November 13-17

It was great meeting with everyone last week. I always look forward to talking to parents in person. It is this time of the year when I usually feel like I really know both parents and children well. If you have questions or concerns from now until spring conferences, please do not hesitate to reach out.

This Wednesday, November 15th is our Thanksgiving Feast at school. You are welcome to join us for lunch and eat with your student. Lunch begins at 11:50am.

With only one week until Thanksgiving break, we have many loose ends to wrap up in literacy, math and social studies. Here is a look into next week:

Literacy

This past week we leaned about Icky. Icky is an important Superkid character because we learn the short /i/ sound.

  • Handwriting and Spelling: Form I and i, Encode I and i for /i/

  • Comprehension: Generate questions, sequence events and draw conclusions

  • Fluency: Speak as a story character

  • Vocabulary and Grammar: Things associated with sleep overs, information on insects

  • Writing: Draw and label a picture

We will begin learning about Tic, Tac and Toc for the letter Tt. There are 7 lessons for this unit. We will carry this unit over and finish after Thanksgiving break"

  • Handwriting and Spelling: Form T and t, Encode T and t for /t/

  • Comprehension: Determine important ideas, plot, problem and solution

  • Fluency: Observe punctuation and speak with proper stress

  • Vocabulary and Grammar: musical instruments and bands

  • Writing: Interview a classmate, draw and label a classmate, present drawing

  • Lasting Lesson: Being a good friend

Math

We are learning about Geometry.

Here are this weeks objectives:

  1. Find and describe flat triangles, squares, rectangles, hexagons, and circles using informal language without naming.

  2. Explain decisions about classifications of triangles into categories using variants and non-examples. Identify shapes as triangles.

  3. Explain decisions about classifications of rectangles into categories using variants and non-examples. Identify shapes as rectangles.

  4. Explain decisions about classifications of hexagons and circles and identify them by name. Make observations using variants and non-examples.

  5. Describe and communicate positions of all flat shapes using the words above, below, beside, in front of, next to, and behind.

Science

We have been very successful at growing our beans! As we wrap up our plant unit this week, look for the giant bean plants coming home. If you place them in a sunny window and keep them watered, they will continue to grow.

Social Studies

We are learning about past, present and future in Social Studies. We are learning about how Native Americans and Pilgrims lived long ago and comparing to how we live today. On Friday, we will have a mini Thanksgiving Feast with our buddies.

We are also focusing on what it means to be a good friend. You may hear your child talk about behaviors that are friend maker behaviors and behaviors that are friend breaker behaviors. It is a great way to bring about an awareness of self and others.

  • Long Sock Day (Bring Change for a Donation to Charity): Friday, 11/17
